3.
CONFIRMATION OF THE AGM MINUTES: Minutes adopted by Darryn Ridgway and seconded by Berny Loggenberg. Matters arising from these minutes. To be discussed under the relevant items.
4.
CHAIRMAN?S REPORT: Circulated and read by Darryn Ridgway. As you are all aware Darryn and I took over wakeboarding when the sport was in total disarray, due to unforeseen circumstances as well as work commitments I have had no alternative but to hand the Chairmanship: to Mr. Darryn Ridgway. The relatively small team that we have been with Darryn, Berny and I have proved quite successful and I believe in my opinion that we have elevated the sport to a new level. Yes, there have been instances in the past where wrong decisions have been made and politics always plays a roll. These however are not the issues to dwell on, the issue of the AGM is to look at the past and see where we can improve for the future. The same crowds are at every event, yet more and more people are on the water with their boards. We are not getting to the new generation of boarders that are out there. Many of you believe, or certain individuals believe that the sport is easy to maintain, and makes money!! This is certainly not the case. Yes from the financials you will see we have at last accumulated some form of cash flow in the account, however I will tell you that this has been to the personal expense of the three of us. I have heard various ?rumours? with regards to certain individuals that want to run Wakeboarding in the country or take over the sport, to benefit themselves and make wakeboarding ?HUGE? I implore those individuals enthusiasm however with economic times as they are, you need a reality check and I ask myself the question time and time again, can it be achieved ? the answer in the short term is an emphatic ?NO? ? in the long run yes I believe together we can take the sport from strength to strength. I believe the issues with regards to wakeboarding should be looking at combining cable and boat under one umbrella and various other attributes that can lead to growth in the sport. I would like to also take this opportunity to thank all of those that have made it through I believe two wonderful seasons. Special thanks to Jono, Deidre, Shawn, Matt, Tich, Mark BM and I cannot mention you all for helping with judging and all round general help. A special thanks to Bernie ? all your help and keeping the financials in order, to Mark BM in CT for the awesome Nationals held and the organisation behind the event. A special thanks to Darryn ? who has organised such awesome events ? your organisational skills are incredible and it is largely part to you that the EAMES recently held at the Emerald Casino as well as wakeboarding as a whole has had much success. I am not one to dwell on the past disappointments or achievements, however please consider this my proxy for the voting of the committee, I will stand, and should I be voted on will stand as a committee member or as Vice-Chairman and will continue to help where I can. I would like to make my vote known that I would like to see Mr. Darryn Ridgway retain the chairmanship position; I would also like to see the retention of Mr. Berny Loggenberg as Treasurer. I would also like to see other members elected to the committee and propose Mr. Tich Mitchell and Mark Burton Moore also are elected. Prior to the voting that takes place, I would like to just say that before you vote or elect people to stand on the committee, you need to realise that the people you vote onto the committee are there for you to complete all the hard work surrounding a season, or attaining national colours, attending the Waterski federation Meetings and a host of other tasks that need to be completed, TV Coverage, Sponsorships etc. I realise the work that is put in and assure you it is almost a full time job, therefore before you stand or are elected ensure that you will be fully committed.

Regards
Charles Harrison.. Chairman (SAWBA)

REPORT FOR THE 2008 SEASON
:
At the beginning of the season our objective was clear, put South Africa Wakeboarding back in the International spotlight. Our plan was simple, host five National Pro Tour Stops, one International EAME Championship and send a team to 2007 Worlds in Doha-Qatar.
Pro Tour Stop
1: (13th -14th Oct 2007) was sponsored by Daytona Marine and held at the Riviera Aquatic Club. Attendance levels particularly at this time of the year are always on the low side due to matrics writing their final exams and school children about to start writing exams, nonetheless it was still a great competition and everything ran smoothly. Worlds Doha-Qatar :( 30th Oct -2nd Nov 2007) a large squad was sent over to Doha-Qatar for the 2007, IWSF, Wakeboard World Championships. For a lot of us it was our first taste of international competition. The competition was tough and with that came the realisation that if we are going to be competitive at EAME?s, we as a team would need to lift our game.
Pro Tour Stop 2:
(1st -2nd Dec 2007) was sponsored by Matlosana, City of Klerksdorp and Tige Boats. The year before was a resounding success with sponsorship from the Tusk Rio Casino. This year however saw the casino pull out leaving very little sponsorship money. The competition as a whole was still a success, riders numbers were up to a total of 32 riders.

Pro Tour Stop 3:
(19th-20th Jan 2008) was cancelled due to boat sponsor cancelling and a general
consensus on us focusing on the upcoming EAME Championships. EAME Championships 2007: (11th-17th Feb2008) although the 2007 EAME Championships was held in 2008 due to worlds being held in October, it was an event not many people will forget in a hurry. What made it such a great event was everything was there for everyone and it was a perfect site for wakeboarding. For me what made this event so successful was the fact that the people who were involved (Charles, Berny and I) built a relationship and worked together as a team with the Emerald Casino. South Africa as a team came second overall.
Pro Tour Stop 4:
(5th-6th April 2008) was cancelled due to work commitments.

SA Open:
(26th-27th April 2008) this was the first time the SA Open had come to Cape Town. Milnerton
Aquatic Club-Rietvlei was the venue and Mark Burton-Moore and his crew put on an awesome show. We had a great turnout of 61 riders, of which all riders and parents were very pleased in the way which the competition was run. The results from the season?s events have been used to compile a squad, and from that, we will select a team, that will represent South Africa at the upcoming EAME Championships in France from the 21st- 31st August 2008.
2008 EAME Wakeboard and
Wakeskate championships in France:
After South Africa hosting the hugely successful 2007 event in February this year at the Emerald Casino on the Vaal, the organizers of the 2008 event had their work cut out for them to keep the standard up. Many of the riders had overwhelming comments on how well the event in SA was organized and what a wonderful time they had so the SAWSF and SAWBA can be proud of what they achieved. The town of Tremolat, about 200km east of Bordeaux, is situated on the banks of the Dordogne River it is one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. The event was run from the Aquitaine water ski ligue by the hard working Jean Claude Dartiguelongue. So as you can see by the names the communication with the average French person was not as easy as one would expect. The wake skating was held the week before the wakeboarding and was not as well attended as the latter event. Dylan Mitchell the current SA Wakeskate champion was the only rider entered from SA. He competed in the boys division. The qualifying heats on the Friday went well and he qualified in 1st place for the finals leading by 10 points over the next competitor Freddie Carter (GBR). The finals where held on Sunday where the boys division rode first. The pressure was on for every rider to put down a clean pass. In his final pass he fell on the first slider which turned on the heat for him and he ended up 3 points behind Will Bradley (GBR) to finish in 2nd place. The wakeboard event a week later was rescheduled to take place a day earlier, due to the fact of the number of entrants, 123 riders from 17 countries. This resulted in the South African team arriving a day before the event and missing out on the opportunity of practicing behind the official towboat. It meant that the first time they hit the wake was in their first pass of competition so they were under pressure from the start of the competition. The following riders where representing South Africa: Dylan Mitchell and Ryan Durham in the boys division (under 15) Brian Loggenberg, Junior men (under 19) Gina Faccio, junior ladies, Justin Selby and Kevin Dry, masters (39yrs). The open division was represented by Nick Burton Moore, Devon Nassif, Shaun Faccio and Clayton Krause (Team Captain). Clayton must be complemented by the roll he played as the team captain. His spirit for competing is great and he was on the dock every day to hand over the line for each team member. In the boys division Ryan lost a slot in the semis by two places and was relegated to ride in the LCQ round and lost out by one place. He still has two years in that division and should do well next year. Dylan got through his heat then had a very good semi final and qualified 2nd in the final. In the final the pressure of being 2nd last off the dock got to him and he fell and ended up coming 6th.In the junior men Brian did not have good luck in his first run and had another bash in the LCQ but sadly did not make it through. Gina in the junior ladies had a good run in her heat and qualified 2nd for the final. The pressure mounted when she fell in the final and she ended up 4th overall. In the masters division Kevin did very well claiming a 2nd in his heat 1st in the semis qualifying 2nd for the final but loosing the handle doing a front roll ,of all things, after the cut off buoys in the final pass to finish 7th. Justin didn?t make it through his heat. He had a good chance to make it in the LCQ. His first pass went very well opening with an S bend until the end of the pass when the boat ran wide of the slider and he could not hit the obstacle. He threw the handle and asked for a rerun of the obstacle. The judge granted it and they towed him all the way down the course to clear the rollers and then returned to hit the slider which would have been correct according to the rules. On the way up the judges instructed him to cross the wake and perform tricks; this confused him as he understood that the rule only requires you to have a rerun of the obstacle. Unfortunately his second pass then didn?t go so well. We put in a protest for redress on his first pass and won, the first time that a protest has been won at a WWC event, but unfortunately he didn?t make it though. In the open men we had strong representation in the 33 entrant field. Shawn Faccio, who had been riding in Italy some month before showed good form and got through his heat as did Clayton. Devon and Nic were not so lucky and had to contest a slot in the semis by riding in the LCQ?s. Nick showed how the experience of riding in the USA helped by riding back after a fall in his run and made it in to the semis. Devon was not so lucky. Devon didn?t go away empty handed as he won the fun event, a one trick night contest under a flood light, with a huge back side 180 on a 90ft line. The prize was a wakeboard holiday for a week in Bali.Shawn went on to win his semi-final with a flawless run to qualify 2nd for the final. In the final he rode hard from 2nd off the dock not holding back and fell on his last pass and still managed to end up 3rd overall. Dan Nott taking 1st place with Sam Carne as runner up.In the Team Event we did not do as well as expected by placing 9th. Considering it was in our winter season, and a really cold one at that, and that the team could not practice the day before hitting the wake it was an excellent achievement to have four of our riders qualify in 2nd place for the finals. We did win huge appraisal form Stephano Duranti the president of the EAME Wakeboard Council whom on more than one occasion commented on the South African team?s wonderful manner and sportsmanship. Thanks to the SAWSF for there full support. The SAWBA committee and Mark Burton Moore for organizing Billabong as a kit sponsor.

Mitchell
Conclusion: Although two events were cancelled looking back on the season I think it was a resounding success.

Darryn Ridgway Vice- Chairman (SAWBA)
